Bird of Paradise Historic Biplane Rides
Friday, December 22nd, 2006| Share |
There was a time when flying meant an open cockpit airplane. Pilots and passengers alike were in intimate contact with the airplane and the air it flew through. It was a magical time, and you can now relive this experience. The Bird of Paradise, in the finest tradition of the barnstormers of the golden age of aviation, is a 1928 Travel Air biplane, which has undergone a three year complete restoration. One or two passengers can cruise over Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, low enough to wave at those beach goers looking up and wishing they were you. This is truly one of the most exciting, unique experiences on the Gulf Coast and a great way to see all the beauty of our white sand beaches. Gift Certificates are available. (We know from experience, this makes a great anniversary gift!) Call (866) Must Fly or visit them online for more details.

I was taken for a fly in The Bird of Paradise several years ago during the second Thunder on the Gulf powerboat races in Orange Beach. The purpose of the ride was to take aerial photos of the races.
What I received was much more than a few good aerial shots of boats going around in a big oval. As a native of the area, it seems I have always known of local landmarks, but they somehow seem new and different when seen from a thousand feet up.
One note of caution – when Bar tells you to wear the ear protection gear please do so. I opted not to wear the gear and my ears rang for two days after the ride.
Get to know the area you thought you already knew. Take a ride in The Bird of Paradise. you won’t regret it.
