The Alabama Gulf Coast is rich in history — Native American, British, French, Spanish and many others have explored, settled and often fought over the coastal waters and fertile fields for generations.  One battle, however, is well-known to even the least interested history student, and usually for a most famous quote: “Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead!”

For visitors to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Fort Morgan is a must-see all year round, but never more so than this summer as Civil War re-enactors unleash rifle and artillery fire during the 145th Anniversary of the Battle of Mobile Bay and the Siege of Fort Morgan 1-2 August 2009.

Civil War history buffs may prep for their visit by checking out the winter edition of Hallowed Ground magazine, which offers an 11-page look at the naval battle over the last major Confederate port not under control of Union forces.
