Indian Village “Achuse” on Shell Banks Baptist Church Site

The tiny Shell Banks Baptist Church is nestled among oaks and sand near the achuse-2site of the first Indian village in America visited by a white man.  Admiral Moldando, a scout for the explorer De Soto,  sailed into the village known as “Achuse” prior to De Soto himself moving up from Tampa Bay in 1539. The Indian village “Achuse” appears on several historical maps, and the historic marker shown was erected in memory of Charles and Sena Ewing.

Blockbuster Summer Acts Coming to The Wharf!

A blockbuster list of top-name musical acts have been added to The Ampitheater at The Wharf lineup for Summer 2009! Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan and John Mellencamp are booked for July 31.  In May, light rock harmonies from the 1970’s will be served up by Three Dog Night.  They group  appears at The Ampitheater at The Wharf on May 24.chicagorhino3_bnpic1

Chicago/Earth, Wind & Fire take the stage on June 5. Styx/REO Speedwagon and Steely Dan have back-to-back dates on June 18 and June 19. Two top-rated Alabama High School Athletic Association events come to Gulf Shores, AL  in May!  AHSAA 1A-6A State Track Championship is May 7-9.   The AHSAA Regional Softball Championship is May 8-10.  Volunteers are needed for both events.  The Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission  and the City of Gulf Shores are hosts to both athletic events.   Read the rest of this entry »
